1. The Village of Winchester first declared it’s independence from Woburn in 1850.
2. Winchester was very nearly named "Columbus" but instead the town fathers honored a wealthy businessman, Colonel William P. Winchester, whose premature death prevented him from ever setting foot in the town bearing his name.
3. In 1979 Winchester native Allan Cormack won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his part in developing CAT scan technology.
Kabul, Afghanistan -- Rep. Markey and members of a congressional delegation met with members of the military while visiting Afghanistan, including Winchester native, Brigadier General Mark Milley of the Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division.
“I am grateful for the sacrifice and dedication of all of our brave men and women serving in Afghanistan,” said Rep. Markey. “I am honored to witness firsthand, their commitment, valor and sacrifice in the name of America's security.”
