June 29, 2006 - MARKEY: SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS DUCKED OPPORTUNITY ON US-INDIA NUCLEAR DEAL
Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Ed Markey, the co-chair of the Bipartisan Task Force on Non-Proliferation, released the following statement at the conclusion of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee markup of the U.S.-India nuclear deal:
“The Senate Foreign Relations Committee ducked its opportunity to ensure that U.S. nuclear cooperation with India does not contribute to their weapons program. Apparently, neither the House nor the Senate foreign relations committees was willing to condition approval of nuclear trade with India to a halt in Indian nuclear testing or a halt in Indian production of fissile materials for nuclear bombs. In fact, the Committees weren’t even willing to require that the President certify that U.S. nuclear technology and fuel are not being used to benefit the Indian nuclear weapons program. This is a sad day for efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons around the world.”
