Afghanistan -- Rep. Markey and members of a congressional delegation
met with members of the military while visiting Afghanistan, including
Winchester native, Brigadier General Mark Milley of the Deputy
Commanding General of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division.
“I am grateful for the sacrifice and dedication of all of our brave
men and women serving in Afghanistan,” said Rep. Markey. “I am honored
to witness firsthand, their commitment, valor and sacrifice in the name
of America's security.”

1. The Village of Winchester first declared it’s independence from Woburn in 1850.
2. Winchester was very nearly named "Columbus" but instead the town fathers honored a wealthy businessman, Colonel William P. Winchester, whose premature death prevented him from ever setting foot in the town bearing his name.
